It is shocking that over 16,400 families, across the country, refused to get their children vaccinated and 610,333 children missed because they were not available, when the vaccination teams visited their homes during the first two days of the latest round of the National Polio Campaign. Police have registered cases against more than 1,400 people and have also arrested 471 in Peshawar for refusing to vaccinate their children. Though it is primary responsibility of parents to get their children administered polio vaccines regularly to save them from a lifetime of disability, they are reluctant to do so due, to illiteracy and ignorance, about seriousness of polio virus. The civil society organizations and social activists have to play an active role to create awareness among the illiterate parents so that they comply and help their children have safe lives.
