ISLAMABAD - The federal government Thursday filed a review petition challenging the judgment of the Supreme Court under Section 203 of Election Act, 2017, regarding disqualification of former premier Nawaz Sharif as the head of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
The federal government also requested the top court to grant two weeks to file a modified review petition against the judgment in this matter.
The registrar office granted two weeks’ time to the government for filing a comprehensive review petition.
Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana filed the review petition, requesting the top court to set aside its verdict of February 21. The top court in its decision had also declared null and void all the decisions taken by Nawaz Sharif as the party chief after his disqualification last year as the parliament member.
The landmark judgment had come in response to 17 petitions filed by opposition parties and some individuals. The petitions had challenged the controversial Election Act, 2017, that had paved the way for Nawaz Sharif’s return as PML-N president. A party head must possess the qualifications mentioned in articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, the court said and ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to remove Nawaz Sharif as PML-N president.
The chief justice in his remarks had said it was crucial for parliamentarians to be of good conduct.
He further said that since a political party head was a powerful person, it was mandatory for him to fulfil the requirements of articles 62 and 63.
