Shoaib Akhtar has been punished for the mistakes he committed in his cricketing career. His crimes included in the charge sheet are his criticism of the PCB and its chairman, disrespect for his colleagues and off the field activities bringing a bad name to the game and the country. Contributions made by Shoaib for the game, and his role in famous Pakistani victories, have been over looked and have had no impact on the decision. I would suggest the President of Pakistan, who is also the patron-in-chief of the PCB, should intervene immediately and pardon Shoaib under NRO. After all, his ordinances have benefited people in the corridors of power with much more serious offences like abuse of power, looting of government and private money, kidnapping and even murder. Shoaib does not have any of these more serious charges against him. He may prove to be the only NRO beneficiary to learn from his past mistakes. -DR FUAD SHAFIQ, Lahore, via e-mail, May 5.
