LAHORE Aisam Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna narrowly missed the doubles title after their defeat in the final of the Open De Nice Cote DAzur ATP World Championship in Nice, South of France on Saturday. They were up against better-ranked, strong and experienced clay court specialist Brazilian pair of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares. No doubt the Brazilian were favourites for the championship but Aisam and Rohan almost snatched the match from them. They were in superb form to take the first set with a 6-1 score after breaking their opponents serve twice. In the second set, however, the Brazilian pair recomposed themselves and raised their level. They broke Indo-Pak pair in their very first service game and took a 3-0 lead but were broken back to make it 3-3. But the Brazilians again broke Aisam and partners serve in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead and went on to win the set 6-3. In the deciding super tiebreak, the Brazilians played absolutely perfect game. They served first serve at 100 percent intensity and were equally perfect in serve returns. They went on to win the super time break 10-5. The irony of the thing is that on an overall basis Aisam & Rohan won 56 out of 111 points while the winners had won 55 points, despite this technicality, the Brazilians stand as winners.
