LAHORE - Despite strict directions by Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif regarding tangible change in Thana Culture and to refer cases of the accused to courts, extra judicial murders in staged police encounters have again registered a come back. Punjab Police seem to decide the disputes on the spot. Neglecting other criminal acts of the Punjab Police, according to data, at least six alleged dacoits were gunned down in what the police claimed encounters in various localities of the city during this month. Through reliable sources it was revealed that Sargodha police were allegedly designing to close the chapter of the life of a proclaimed offender (PO) instead to produce him before the court. After getting disappointment, father of the aforementioned PO perhaps approached The Nation and alleged Tehsil Shahpur police have plotted to gun down his son in an 'encounter. According to details, the arrested PO Aqeel Haider, 25, is among those nine accused who are allegedly involved in double murder case registered against them in 2002 at Jhal Chakian police station in Shahpur, Sargodha. Police sources, however, said during cross fire between Aqeels family and his maternal family two people namely Suleman, 24, and Ilyas, 18, were killed. A case was lodged against nine people and the police had also arrested the accused but two among them including Aqeel and Sikandar Hayyat managed to escape from the police lock-ups, on which they were pronounced as POs. A landlord Nasar Abbas, father of Aqeel, resident of Luck Morr in Kotmomin village, Sargodha, revealed at least 40 police personnel under the leadership of a DSP Malik Wajid raided the home of Aqeels in-laws on May 18 and apprehended him while he was sleeping along with his family. In reply to a query, he said, The deceased were killed from the firing of their own party but the case should be referred to court. Let the court decide who is guilty I have received solid information that DSP wants to kill my son. The complainant Shah Mohammad, cousin of Nasar, has immensely bribed DSP besides pressurising him by a local MPA, he alleged. He further alleged the DSP was hurling threats on them and brutally behaved when the family visited the police concerned. The DSP flatly refused to give his version despite the repeated phone calls by this scribe from the Head Office. Earlier, five alleged dacoits were gunned down by the police and CIA in two consecutive incidents of police encounters in the wee hours of Sunday and Monday in two different localities of the city here on May 2 and 3 in Sanda Police near Nursery Stop. CIA Model Town had also gunned down three Afghan suspects at Cable Networks flat, Kotha Village, in Faisal Town Police precincts here on May 3. They deceased were identified as Jafar Khan, Rozo Din Khan and Dawood Khan, residents of Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Almost two weeks later, on May 15, CIA Sadar killed Abdul Qadeer alias Lamba reportedly involved in more than 80 criminal acts at M-Block in Sabzazaar on Friday night. But according to the residents, they witnessed a real police encounter in which a police constable was killed during an encounter with alleged dacoits in Raiwind Police early on May 9.
