RAWALPINDI  - The sectarian target killing has once again raised his ugly head in Rawalpindi as two religious personalities - Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) unit incharge Tarnol Nasir Abbasi and his companion Mufti Ishtiaq - were assassinated in a drive-by shooting near Maryam Marriage Hall at Shamasabad on Benazir Bhutto Road (BBR) here on Thursday. 
As a result, Nasir died on the spot while Ishtiaq breathed his last when he was rushed to the Benazir Bhutto Hospital.
A city police bosses including City Police Officer Humayun Bashir Tarar, SP CIA Haroon Joya and ASP Syed Zeeshan Haider rushed to the crime scene and later BBH.
According to sources, Nasir Abbasi, who was also Khateeb in a mosque in Tarnol, along with Mufti Ishtiaq was going back to his home on motorcycle after attending "Azmat-e-Hazrat Syedna Ameer Muavia Ibn-e-Abi Safyan Seminar" organized by ASWJ Rawalpindi chapter at Sangam Marriage Hall when two assailants also riding on motorcycle ambushed them near Maryam Marriage Hall and opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons on them. As a result, Nasir Abbasi killed on the spot while Mufti Ishtiaq sustained severe bullet injuries. Both were shifted to BBH by Rescue 1122 where Ishtiaq also could not survive. The assailants managed to escape from the scene.
An eyewitness told The Nation that Abbasi along with Mufti was attacked by two young motorcyclists, who were standing along the road near Maryam Marriage Hall. Scores of activists of ASWJ and relatives of two victims rushed to the hospital after the incident. The activists also staged a demonstration at BBH to condemn the murder. CPO, while talking to The Nation, said, "Yes, it is sectarian killing."
He said that on March 11, Nasir Abbasi also sustained bullet injuries, when the car of Mufti Tanveer came under heavy gunfire in Shakrial, claiming two lives.  It is pertinent to mention here that two unknown assailants had also shot dead a head of seminary Mufti Imran Farooqi of Deoband sect and injured his brother-in-law Musarat Hussain critically in the city on Wednesday last.
The attackers managed to escape after the attack.
