LAHORE: A Group of farmers belonging to Pakistan Kissan Ittehad on Monday launched a protest demonstration on the Mall road for acceptance of their demands.

The protest caused a traffic-block as soon as the protesting farmers came on road leaving footpaths. Situation got tensed after travelers entered into an argument with the protesters.

Kissan Ittehad’s members have demanded the government to end sales tax on fertilizers and lessen power tariff for water pumps. The protesters have also demanded check on imposition of prices set by the government for imported crops.

Farmers were of the opinion that those of them who have fertilized arid pieces of land should be given proprietary rights.

They further demanded the government to seek farmers’ recommendations to put together an agricultural policy.

It should be noted here that a group belonging to Kissan Ittehad had staged a sit-in outside Punjab Assembly last week that continued for over three days.

Successful negotiations with the government prompted the faction to end sit-in. The protest was a joint demonstration by Kissan Ittehad and employees of Punjab Rural Support Programme (PRSP).
