FEROZEWALA Situation turned tense in and around the Ferozewala town on Monday morning when a private channel telecast news about the released of a convict Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who had awarded death sentence by an additional district and sessions judge Nankana Sahib some days back. To know the exact position, people started to approach the District Jail Sheikhupura authorities who informed them that Asia had not been released and was still detained in the death cell of the prison. On the other hand, the lawyers community in Nankana Sahib observed a complete strike, boycotting the court proceeding against Governor Salmaan Taseer remarks that Asia Bibi was innocent and she did not commit any blasphemy. They also held a meeting, with District Bar Association President Shahbaz Bhatti in chair, which passed a unanimous resolution, warning the government not to release the Christian woman. But in case she was set free, all the bar associations of the country would protest against the step, because the woman was given a transparent and fair trial in the court of Naveed Iqbal, Additional District and Sessions Judge Nankana Sahib. They said the eyewitnesses given proper testimony against her while solid proofs were presented before the court regarding her blasphemous act. Similarly, Khatm-e- Nabovat Nankana President Mehar Muhammad Aslam Nasir Advocate at an emergency meeting condemned Salmaan Taseers statement and announced to hold a protest rally today (Tuesday). He demanded immediate removal the governor and execution of the death penalty. He further said there were many other convicts detained in different jails of Punjab under the same offence and why the governor did not bother to approach them.
