US Ambassador to Pakistan, Richard G. Olson on Friday called on Federal Minister for Water and Power, Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and discussed various matters of mutual interest, aiming at enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

Welcoming the ambassador, the minister appreciated US cooperation and assistance being extended to the power sector and said it would help to improve the efficiency of the public sector power entities.

He further said that the government was working on power sector reforms, rehabilitation, up-gradation of Gencos, improvement of the working of the Discos, distribution of 30 million energy savers, installation of smart meters, improvement in recoveries, controlling power theft and reduction of line losses.

The minister said that Pakistan is focusing on coal generation that would save foreign exchange and generate cheaper electricity.

The US ambassador reaffirmed US’s commitment to continue the support to the people of Pakistan and help in improving the power sector in Pakistan. He said that Diamer Basha Dam was an important project for future water requirements and to generate cheaper power, adding the US was interested in the project and other hydel sector projects.
