LAHORE: Plan International Pakistan, a child rights organisation, has welcomed the UN resolution to end child marriage and demanded legislation to check the cruel act.

The organisation appreciated the resolution on ending Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM) describing it as a historic step in protecting the basic human rights of millions of girls. The resolution was adopted during the 69th session of the General Assembly on Saturday. The latest resolution is the most substantive to date and urges all States to enact, enforce and uphold laws and policies aimed at preventing and ending child, early and forced marriage and protecting those at risk.

It also calls on States to ensure that marriage is entered into only with the informed, free and full consent of the intending spouses.

Plan International Pakistan Country Director Rashid Javed welcomed the resolution, saying that this would boost Plan and the Alliance against Child Marriage (AACM) endeavours for ending child marriages in Pakistan.
