LAHORE - Three-day anti polio campaign will start today in three districts of Punjab including Lahore, as part of the Sub National Immunization Day.

The campaign will target more than 5.9 million children of below five years of age in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Sheikhupura (20 Union Councils). As many as 15,212 teams (mobile, fixed, transit teams) will administer polio drops to children in 806 Union Councils of eight districts.

CM’s health adviser Kh Salman Rafiq said that coordination with districts have been made for micro planning, meetings of district management, vaccine supply and mapping of population at greater risk to polio virus. Even though no polio case has been reported from Punjab this year, he added, the positive environmental samples suggested need to immunize children. Healthcare Secretary Ali Jan Khan directed the staff to ensure implementing pre-campaign activities in line with the National Emergency Plan for polio eradication. Punjab Health Director General Dr Mukhtar Hussain Syed said: “We are completely cognizant of the fact that polio virus is showing in environmental samples recently.
