Inmate tortured to death

LAHORE - A prisoner was allegedly tortured to death by the Lahore’s Camp Jail staff, police sources said yesterday.

The victim was identified as Majid Ali, who was jailed in a drug-peddling case. Sources in jail department said that Majid was brutally tortured by the jail staff over some dispute. When his condition got deteriorated, he was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to head injuries. The body was moved to the morgue for an autopsy.

A jail department official however, claimed that Majid fell down accidentally and sustained head injuries. According to Superintendent Asad Javed Waraich, the duty Warder was suspended from service and a departmental inquiry was underway to ascertain the facts.

Prisoners who fail to bribe the policemen are frequently tortured and humiliated by the jail staff. On the other hand, rich and influential criminals are provided all kind of facilities ranging from mobile phone service to drugs.

MAN FOUND MURDERED

A 54-year-old man was found dead from an empty plot located in Baghbanpura area. The body was removed to the morgue for an autopsy.

Investigators identified the victim as Fayyaz Ahmed, a resident of Mahmood Booti. His brother told the police investigators that Fayyaz was missing for the last two days. He further said that his brother was poisoned to death by unknown killers. The police were investigating the death.

DRUGGIE FOUND DEAD

A 40-year-old man was recovered dead from Laajpat Road in Shahdara police precincts. The body, not identified yet, was moved to the morgue for an autopsy.

A police investigator said the deceased apparently a drug addict. Further investigation was in process.
