KARACHI - Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar has said that the local government representatives were born in Karachi, and they know issues of the city better.

“Despite having less powers, the elected representatives of people joined their duties with passion.”

Chairing a meeting held here on Tuesday at KMC building to review the preparations for the holy month of Rabi-ul-Awal, Wasim vowed that Jashn-e-Eid Miladun Nabi (PBUH) will be observed in the city with religious zeal and fervour.

The meeting was attended by deputy mayor of the city, district chairmen, municipal commissioner, clerics of different schools of thought and other officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The mayor further said that KMC and District Municipal Corporation would make all arrangements to facilitate the citizens on the occasion. “We will also take on board other stakeholders in this connection,” he added.

Karachi Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Vohra, while addressing the meeting, said that KMC had secured the requisite cooperation from clerics to make better arrangements for Eid Miladun Nabi (PBUH) and its peaceful conclusion, adding that the need of the hour was to keep an eye on the outlaws.

Vohra further said that despite lack of resources, he and his colleagues wanted to work for development of the city.

The clerics pointed out various municipal issues in their areas, including that of sewage, cleanliness and water.

They also invited the mayor to visit their areas to address the issues confronting them.

On this occasion, Siddique Rathore, a cleric, demanded that the government should give powers to the local government in order to address the pestering issues of the city. He also demanded that a census be held in the city, adding it had been pending for a long time.

Maulana Ferozuddin Rehmani demanded that the federal and provincial governments release funds to KMC for development of the city. Qazi Ahmed Noorani said that route of the main procession and routes of other small procession should be leveled and cleanliness should also be ensured on them.

Later, the mayor assured participants of the meeting that KMC and DMCs would take all steps for the provision of municipal facilities on the eve of Eid Miladun Nabi (SAW), whereas heads of other civic organisations would also be approached in this connection.

Muhammad Hussain Lakhani, Maulana Asghar Dars, Masroor Hashmi, Muhammad Azhar Khan Qadri, Ansar Baig Qadri, Qazi Noor-ul-Islam Shams, Muhammad Saleemuddin, Yousuf Saleem Attari, Shahideen Ashrafi, Maulana Ferozuddin Rehmani, Muhammad Saleem Attari, Siddique Rathore, Saleem Khan Qadri, Nasir Hussain Khan, Muhammad Khalid, Mufti Bilal Shah, Muhammad Yahya Qadri and others also addressed the meeting.
