KARACHI - The election commission has postponed the by-election in the NA-258 constituency in Karachi’s Malir district. The polling will now be held on November 28 instead of November 24.

According to Election Commissioner for Sindh Tanveer Zaki, the polling date has been changed on the request of the Rangers director general keeping in view the ongoing defence exhibition in the city.

The NA-258 seat fell vacant after resignation of Abdul Hakeem Baloch, who quit the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and joined the Pakistan People’s Party a couple of months ago. Baloch is now contesting the by-election in the same constituency on a PPP ticket.

The constituency consists of Malir and Gadap areas of Muslimabad, Ibrahim Haideri, Rerhi Goth, Cattle Colony, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Bin Qasim, Gaggar, Kator, Memon Goth, Sindh and Baloch Goth, etc. The constituency was traditionally considered a PPP stronghold, but PML-N candidate Hakeem Baloch won the seat in 2013 elections.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Muhammad Hanif Bangash, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s Maulana Ikram Shah and Sunni Tehreek’s Munawwar Ali Gabol are contesting the by-election. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has however announced boycott of the by-election.
