EC to form body for delimitations in each province

ISLAMABAD - The election commission will constitute a committee for each province, which will prepare draft proposals for delimitation of constituencies of the National Assembly and the provincial assembly.  

The Election Commission of Pakistan additional secretary, while briefing the National Assembly  Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on the newly-amended Election Act, 2017, and the delimitation process, on Wednesday said that the delimitation committee for each province would consists of no less than three officers of the commission. 

He said that one of them should be designated as the convener and that the committee should prepare draft proposals for delimitation of constituencies of the National Assembly/Provincial Assembly of its province.  

The additional secretary further said that separate Delimitation Committee should be constituted for the ICT and the tribal areas, which should prepare draft proposals for delimitation of constituencies of the National Assembly from those areas. Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs Joint Secretary Shahid Ahmed Sandhu, while briefing the committee, said that it was the responsibility of the committee to process government assurances, and obtain implementation status on the government assurances and maintain records of pending and disposed of government assurances.  

He informed that since 2013, the federal minister for parliamentary affairs has given a total of 152 assurances on behalf of various ministries/departments/organisation including the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.  It was informed that out of 152 assurances, only six government assurances relate to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and no assurances were pending pertaining to this ministry. 

The acting chairman, Pakistan International Airlines briefed the committee about the mismanagement and delay and cancellation of flights and problems being faced by the parliamentarians.  

The committee expressed grave annoyance over the poor performance of the PIA and directed the management to take measures to improve the existing situation of the organisation.
