On 23rd November, 2006 Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the first woman President of Liberia. She is the first woman to head an African country. Her victory was without doubt a great for women in general. SirLeaf was reelected to office in 2011. She has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in empowering women through non-violent ways in her country. She has also chairing the Economic Community for West Africa and is again the first woman to hold this position since the formation of the organization.
