Eastwards Hu

The Kerry Lugar Bill is so seeped into our souls that all we care about is to change its disputed clauses so that it can then be accepted by us. No one is even considering the fact that as a sovereign state having a constitution of its own, we should steadfastly resist a policy that is being imposed on us from abroad. As an independent nation, we are dutybound not to accept the aid at the cost of our enslavement. One understands the view that economics, rather than emotions, give strength to the society and we do need more foreign investment here. But our politicians need to promote trade and investment in Pakistan rather than seek an injection of aid. That is like a narco drug that creates greater dependence. We should look Eastwards now for assistance and, for once, attempt to make a self-sufficient society. -LUBNA KHALIL, Lahore, October 21.
