Malaysian King confers degree on Dr Atta

KARACHI - King of Malaysia, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on Professor Attaur Rehman, FRS, former Minster for S&T and former chairman of the Higher Education Commission, in Malaysia during the 75th convocation ceremony held on October 20 at the University of Technology Malaysia. Prof Attaur Rehman was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in science by the Malaysian University in recognition of his services to science and higher education sector in and outside the country, especially to Muslim World. An official of the ICCBS said, The king praised Pakistans renowned scientist Prof Dr Attaur Rehman for his remarkable services in science and higher education. Attas services for uplift of science and higher education in Pakistan and in the Islamic world are praiseworthy and developing nations should learn from the experience Pakistan has made in these sectors with his vision and leadership. Prof Atta informed the leaders of academia that how Pakistan made rapid progress in the fields of science and higher education from the year 2000 to 2008. Dr Attaur has 843 publications in organic chemistry including 663 research publications, 18 patents, 103 books and 59 chapters in books. He was elected as Fellow of Royal Society, London (2006). He won the prestigious Unesco Science Prize (1999). He has been conferred honorary doctorate degrees by Cambridge University (1987), Coventry University (2007), Bradford University (2010), Asian Institute of Technology (2010) and many other universities. He was elected Honorary Life Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University, UK (2007). Successive fovernments of Pakistan have conferred four civil awards including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (1983), Sitara-i-Imtiaz (1991), Hilal-i-Imtiaz (1998), and the highest national civil award Nishan-i-Imtiaz (2002). He has won numerous national and international prizes including the ECO, Khwarizmi, Isesco, KFAS and Engro prizes. Karachi University VC Dr Pirzada Qasim and International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences Director, KU, Dr Iqbal Chaudhry has congratulated him on his great achievement.
