Online fears for personal details

Three out of four people believe online firms are not keeping their personal details secure, figures have shown. More than two-thirds of Britons think existing laws fail to provide sufficient protection of personal information, and three in five feel they have lost control over the way their information is collected and processed. The survey of more than 1,200 people for the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) showed public confidence falling, with less than half (49%) believing organisations handle personal information in a fair and proper way, down from 56% last year. Online firms concerned most people, with only one in four (26%) agreeing that web-based organisations collect and keep their personal details in a secure way. Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said: The fact is that security breaches in the private sector are on the rise, and public confidence in good information handling is declining. Companies need to consider the damage that can be done to a brands reputation when data is not handled properly. Customers will turn away from brands that let them down. ON
