Islamabad - Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said that government believed in promoting responsible media freedom and its growth and dissemination of information to people.

He was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Islamabad on Thursday. He said that Pakistan had been consistent in its support for the United Nations Information Centres. Ambassador of Argentina and Dean of Diplomatic Corps Rodolfo Martin Saravia, Resident Coordinator UN Neil Buhne and Director UNIC Vittorio Cammarota were present and spoke on the occasion.

Pervaiz Rashid highlighted the role of the UN in making the world a better place and spoke about Pakistan’s support to UN peacekeeping operations in 23 countries.

He said that public support for the United Nations would obviously grow as more and more people would know about its endeavours to address their needs and priorities on a broad range of issues from poverty, climate change, health , hunger to illiteracy and sustainable development.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid says Pakistan is determined to implement the charter and principles of the United Nations.

The minister said Pakistan is working with the United Nations for peace and has sent its contingents in the UN peace missions in twenty-three countries. Director UNIC Vittorio Cammarota giving details about the new centre said that established in Karachi in 1951, their office was part of the network of 63 United Nations Information Centres currently operating all over the world.

“In the past few years we have made considerable efforts to open our doors to the Pakistani people and institutions to make sure that they feel integral part of our Centre and are involved in our activities.”

The new UNIC office will enable to serve its counterparts betters and to improve the interaction with media and other counterparts.

The new office allows better access to improved facilities which include a dedicated area for interns and a state-of-the art multimedia studio. The equipment for the studio was donated by several UN agencies for the benefit of the whole UN system. Heads of various UN agencies and a large number of diplomats attended the inauguration ceremony.
