Asif asks PPP ministers to stay cool

ISLAMABAD (Agencies) A delegation of PPP ministers from Punjab cabinet called on President Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday and discussed matters pertaining to the state of affairs in the province, as they voiced their concerns over being neglected by the PML-N leadership. Current status of relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-affected areas, results of the recently held by-elections in Punjab and party affairs were also reviewed. The provincial ministers who visited the Presidency included Raja Riaz, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Muhammad Ashraf Sohna, Haji Muhammad Ishaq, Dr Tanvir-ul-Islam and Yousaf Ghurki. Minister of State for Law and Justice Mehreen Anwar Raja, Rukhsana Bangash MNA, PPP Information Secretary Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar were also present during the meeting. President Zardari directed the PPP Punjab ministers to tolerate Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for the sake of country and also asked them to support Nawaz Sharif to stop him looking towards non-political forces. He said, The PPP is ready to face any challenge, we have restored democracy and we will defend it too and the government will complete the five-year term. The ministers complained about the provincial govts continued attitude of not taking them into confidence over government matters, on which the President said these things had to be tolerated for the good of the country. He said the PPP would not do anything which might contribute in the removal of the government of Punjab, and would remain a part of the cabinet. The President, while mentioning the success of the party in Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Sargodha and other constituencies in by-elections, appreciated the political work done by the party. He directed the provincial ministers, parliamentarians and party workers in Punjab to play active role and remain side-by-side with the flood victims by personally visiting the relief camps. He urged the need of involving the party and political workers in the relief operations. He said Diesel Cards would be issued to provide cheap diesel to farmers while electricity bills of the affectees would also be waived off. President Zardari stressed the need of close monitoring of the rehabilitation activities by the public representatives. He said transparency was the key to combating corruption and a decision had been taken to make the distribution of relief and rehabilitation most transparent, the President said. He said the government was utilising all available resources to rehabilitate the flood victims to their original dwellings and assured that they would have better homes with modern design and technology. Raja Riaz also apprised Zardari about the initiatives taken by the provincial government and the party for the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims in Punjab. Online adds: President Zardari categorically said he is not among those frightened people who run away from the country in hard times, hence leaving the country in dire straits, adding that the PPP is a symbol of federation and it will safeguard democracy thick and thin. He said all donations and relief goods and their disbursement to the provinces and the flood-hit areas will be available on web and everyone can access this information.
