ISLAMABAD The National Assembly (NA) was informed on Wednesday that the construction work on Diamer Bhasha Dam, with gross capacity of 8.1 million acre feet and installed power capacity of 4500 megawatts, would be initiated next month. Other 32 dams are also in pipeline, said Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf responding to the questions during NA question-hour. He said that formalities with regard to Dimaer Bhasha Dam project had almost been done and work on that mega project would be completed by next month. Talking about other dams, which are in the pipeline, the minister said that the Government was also planning to construct other 32 small and medium level dams across the country. Talking about Mangla Dam project, he said that Mangla Dam project had been completed substantially by December 2009; however urban development works and resettlements of affected people was expected to be completed by December 2010. Subsequently, the minister said that Rs 5 billion were required to compensate the affected people .He said that once the affectees shift to the designated places, the dam would be filled to the new capacity. To a question about Tarbella Dam, he said at present the Government is conducting survey for its desilting that would revive old capacity of the reservoir.
