Hinas right exposition

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has told the OIC Contact Group on Kashmir that the real solution of the dispute is to hold a UN-supervised plebiscite to determine the will of the people as mandated by the UN Security Council resolutions. The issue is costing the Kashmiri people dearly. They are being routinely killed and suffering human rights abuses being committed by the Indian occupation forces. That the Contact Group has chosen to meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly is appropriate, for all that is desired is for India to obey resolutions that it itself agreed to, as it did at the time of the passage, reflecting the will of the international community. Instead of allowing India to run a campaign for its being given permanent membership of the UNSC, it would be better if it was held to its solemn pledges made to the world body, especially about determining the status of Kashmir. The Contact Group should not be so hesitant in a matter involving so much suffering of fellow Muslims, especially when backed by a UN resolution. It is to be seen whether the Contact Group members make any special effort after the USAs President Barack Obama told the General Assembly that the USA did not support the Palestinian bid for membership. It was expected that the impending struggle for Palestinian membership was likely to draw energy off the Kashmir cause. It is only to be hoped that Ms Khar finds the fortitude to present the Kashmir cause to the UNGA as a whole when she does address it, and to present it without dilution or any mincing of words designed to meet Indian sensibilities. It bears remembering that the Pakistani stance enjoys the twin advantages of practicality and of backing by the international community. It is presumably because of this that India has not just resiled from it, but also wants it not to be mentioned by anyone else.
