OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE - The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations Executive Council for Punjab on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution demanding that there should be only one chancellor for all the universities in the Punjab. It also opposed the Punjab Cabinets decision to have separate chancellors for all university. However, the meeting agreed on the separation of offices of the Governor and the Chancellor. The executive council of FAPUASA meeting was held at Government College University Lahore. The meeting was chaired by President Punjab Chapter FPUASA Prof Dr Mahr Saeed Akhtar and was attended by Prof President GCU ASA Dr Hassan A Shah, General Secretary FAPUASA Prof Dr M Zafar Noon, General Secretary Punjab Chapter FAPUASA Dr Abdul Qudoos Suhaib and others. The participants of the meeting stressed that the Chancellor should be a non political person with a strong academic background fulfilling at least the eligibility of a University Professor and should be independent of both the Chief Minister and the Governor. The FAPUASA should be represented in the Committee to select the Chancellor. A separate secretariat should be established to handle the maters of the Universities which should be independent of the Punjab Secretariat. It was also demanded that the appointment of the VCs of BZU and University of Sargodha should be made immediately in accordance with respective Acts/Charters of these Universities. If these appointments are not made within eight days then ASAs of different Universities of the Punjab would begin an agitation, said president FPUASA. He demanded of the government that all the charters of the Universities of the Punjab should be in accordance with 1973 Constitution, and Charter of the newer Universities should be accordingly modified to give teachers a proper representation on the governing bodies such as the syndicate and senate of the respective Universities. On the occasion, a resolution was adopted that teachers having PhDs should not be appointed on contractual TTS basis only, but the provision of making BPS appointments should be made essential ensuring job security to these teachers. A resolution was also passed that a Housing Scheme be developed by the Punjab Government for all the University Teachers of Punjab. A resolution was also passed to standardize the allowances in all the Universities. Saeed Akhtar while talking to media said that, the approval of the statutes and many other files of the Universities of the Punjab have not been approved for the many years and these are pending either with the Governor or the Department of Education. These should be approved immediately.
