SC allows Pemra chief’s appointment

ISLAMABAD - Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan of the Supreme Court of Pakistan yesterday directed the Islamabad High Court to speed up its judgment on the ousted Pemra chairman’s petition.
The electronic media watchdog has been leaderless since the sacking of Chaudhry Abdur Rashid by the PML-N government in 2014. His legal case against his dismissal has delayed the appointment of a successor and given TV channels a free hand to cross the boundaries of acceptable standards. The Supreme Court allowed the Information Ministry to recruit a potential successor, but ruled that any new appointment could not be confirmed unless and until Chaudhry Abdur Rashid’s dismissal was upheld by the high court.
