KARACHI Balochistan Bears - defending a low total - shocked a strong Punjab Stallions whom they defeated by 44 runs in the RBS Pentangular One Day Cricket Championship here Thursday night at the National Stadium. No one could have predicted that Balochistan Bears could win the contest when they managed low 149 for nine in 40.3 overs. But the unexpected happened when Punjab Stallions having batsmen like Imran Farhat and Nasir Jamshed were bowled out for 109 in 34 overs with Zulfiqar Baber running through the Punjab team with six for 10 in an eight-over spell. There was no apparent cause for the Punjab team to collapse to a low total because on the same wicket Balochistan Bears with little known batsmen had managed a bigger total. Zulfiqar Baber won player of the match award for his sensational bowling spell that found no answers from experienced batsman like Imran Farhat who managed just 12 in 24 balls. Nasir Jamshed who in the last match had hammered a century fought his way to 45 in 79 balls. Taufiq Umer with a fine 57 helped his team reach a moderate un-defendable total but things proved different when the losers went into bat. Summarised scores: Balochistan Bears: 149 in 40.3 overs (Taufiq Umar 57, 95 balls, 3 x4s, Jalat Khan 38, 48 balls, 5 x4s,1 x6s, Rizwan Haider 16, 22 balls, 2 x4s, Muhammad Talha 8.3-2-28-4; Asad Ali 8-0-32-3; Imran Ali 8-1-29-2; Imran Farhat 4-0-16-1). Punjab Stallions: 109 in 34 overs (Nasir Jamshed 45, 79 balls, 4 x4s Imran Farhat 12, 24 balls, Naeemuddin 17, Usman Arshad 16, Zulfiqar Baber 8-3-10-6; Jalat Khan 6-1-15-2; Muhammad Irfan 8-1-37-2).
