LAHORE Two former national champions Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and WAPDA booked their passage into quarter-final from group-A when PAF managed to brush aside Railways 3-2 in a thriller of the 20th NBP National Football Challenge Cup (NFCC) at Multans Qila Kuhna Qasim Bagh on Thursday night under flood-lit system. The win also put WAPDA into elimination stage as Railways failed to earn single point in the three-team group as compared to PAFs six and WAPDAs three. In final, two matches of group-B were played in which SSGC overwhelmed Police 4-1 while Army registered hard-earned 2-1 win over PIA. Under superb coaching of Qazi Muhammad Asif, PAF snatched last-gasp winner to beat Railways 3-2 after they were 2-2 in the first 16 minutes. The airmen made explosive start with two goals inside nine minutes. Striker Muhammad Mujahid landed opener in the 85th seconds and created the other for winger Amir Hussain in the ninth minute. But shaky Railway team came out of their shell and reduced both the goals through striker Adnan and Asim Mansoor in the 13th and 16th minute. It was 2-2 at interval and it was left to Toba Tek Singh-midfielder Muhammad Jamil to hammer the match winner in the 88th minute. Champions in 2000, 2001, Army held leadership in group-B with third straight win. They had to thank Karachi-born 26 year old striker Noorul Amin for the win who steered 61st minute winner after both the teams were locked 1-1. Spearhead Imran Hussain surged soldiers ahead in the 31st minute but PIA, who won NFCC in 1984, came back through their playmaker Nasr Ullah who turned the ball in from close range after Hussnain Abbas and Shakir Lashari had moved in concert. In other match of same group, SSGC, new entrant in next months PPFL, gave no chance whatsoever to Police and returned back from the pitch with resounding 4-1 win. Their hero was winger Ata Ullah who struck twice in the 53rd and 83rd minute. SSGC led 2-0 at interval and their other goal-getters were winger Asim Faiz and spearhead Shah Nawaz who struck in the 41st and 85th minute respectively. Midfielder Muhammad Zahid earned 85th minute consolation goal for Police. Saturday fixture: PAF v Navy (1st quarter-final 7:30 pm), NBP v Pakistan WAPDA (second quarter-final 10:15 pm).
