ISLAMABAD The Ministry of Interior on Friday notified the two-day holidays in government offices that would be effective from today. The notification was issued after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani announced on Thursday a number of measures including five-day working week in government offices to conserve energy and reduce power outages by 33 per cent. According to the details, all government offices would observe holidays on Saturday and Sunday while working hours would be from 8:00am till 4:00pm from Monday to Friday. The lunch break would be between 1:00pm to 1:30pm while office timings on Friday would remain the same with Friday prayer break from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. The notification also applies on the government-run educational institutions that will also remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. Like other public sector institutions, educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities of the country would also have two weekly holidays. The notification of the two-day holidays was issued very late, which created confusion among the students and teachers. Even the DG, Federal Directorate of Education, was not sure till the issuance of the notification whether the decision would be applied on schools and colleges or not. In the capital, the schools like Beacon House, Roots and others that are catering to the educational needs of children of elite class already observe two-day holidays and ultimately the decision would not affect them. Public sector universities following the notification will also remain closed on each Saturday. However, the administration of some private sector universities while talking to TheNation said that they were not bound to follow the decision and so some of them like FAST would remain open on Saturday.
