Thalassaemia moot starts

LAHORE The 7th National Thalassaemia conference and workshops started at Fatima Jinnah Medical College on Saturday. The Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan, the umbrella organisation of all the 40 Thalassaemia associations working in the country, organised the annual event. Prof Dr Rakshanda Rehman was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the conference. A large number of patients, parents, society officials and doctors from all over Pakistan and abroad are attending the conference. Hussain Jafri, Secretary of Punjab Chapter of TFP said that conference would provide update knowledge on Thalassaemia to patients and healthcare providers. Prof. Dr. Yasmin Raashid, Secretary General, TFP presented the activities of the federation during the last one year. She said that Federation is the uniting factor of all the Thalassaemia associations working in the country. She said that Federation was promoting and assisting Thalassaemia research, improving treatment protocols and ensuring optimal prevention for Thalassaemia. Moinuddin Haider, President of TFP said that Federation is working hard to creating awareness about Thalassaemia by educating the public and various health delivery organizations of Pakistan. He appealed to the govt to provide optimal treatment & prevention services to Thalassaemics all over the country. Thalassaemia is an anemia and is the commonest inherited disorder in the country with a carrier rate of 6 % in the country. There are more than 30,000 patients suffering from Thalassaemia.
