NEW YORK – Editor of Nawa-i-Waqt and Chairman of Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust Majid Nizami on Sunday urged the members of Pakistani community in the United States to work hard in advancing the interest of Pakistan and projecting the true image of their homeland.Speaking by Skype to a large gathering, which included US-based Pakistani journalists and representatives of Pakistani political parties, he underscored the need for Pakistani-Americans to create a strong lobby for Pakistan and to counter the hostile propaganda against it.The event marking the 50th anniversary of his editorship was organised by Nawa-i-Waqt columnist Tyeba Zia Cheema at a restaurant in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City, in cooperation with the head of Kashmir Centre, Khalid Shaheen Butt.  Pakistan’s Consul General in New York Faqir Asif Hussain was the chief guest at the function at which speakers paid glowing tributes to Majid Nizami on his golden jubilee as the editor of one of Pakistan’s top newspapers. The Press Counsellor at the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, Mian Jehangir Iqbal, was also present.The speakers included Sarwar Chaudhry, president of Pakistan People’s Party, New York, and Rahil Dar, president of Pakistan Muslim League, New York. They said Nizami had stood by his values and principles despite pressures from martial law and civilian authoritarian regimes. Nizami continued to educate generations of Pakistan about the vision of Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah for Pakistan as an Islamic democratic welfare state. Most of the journalists present joined in lauding his services to the nation, especially his upright stand on the Two-Nation Theory, Kashmir and relations with India, as well as, in defence of Pakistan as a nuclear-weapon state.Consul General Faqir Asia Hussain told the audience that the government of Pakistan had recognised Majid Nizami’s services by conferring the country’s high awards on him from time to time.n
