ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (Pemra) on Wednesday issued a show cause notice to GEO TV on the complaint of Ministry of Defense and sought reply in 14 days.  

Well-placed sources in Pemra informed this scribe the Defence Ministry's application was submitted to the media regulator under Section 36 of the Pemra Ordinance 2002.

Earlier, the Pemra had sent the ministry's application, seeking cancellation of Geo TV, to its law department for legal opinion.

According to official sources, Information Minister Senator Pervaiz Rasheed meanwhile chaired a meeting at the ministry regarding the present situation and Pemra Chairman's appointment.

Officials of the Information Ministry and Establishment Division briefed Pervaiz Rasheed about the application seeking cancellation of GEO TV license. Pemra officials told the Minister that Pemra forwarded the Ministry of Defense application to law department for legal aspects.

The Ministry of Defense had moved the application against Geo TV on Tuesday last and taken the stance that Geo TV launched the propaganda against Inter Service Intelligence Chief and put the questions on the performance of ISI after the attack on Hamid Mir by unknown gunmen. 

The Establishment Division officials briefing the minister about the procedure of appointment of new Chairman Pemra. The post of Chairman Pemra had fallen vacant after the President sacked Chaudhry Rasheed on the advice of Prime Minister. They informed the minister about Rauf Commission's present status.


Three-member judicial commission formed to probe attack on an anchorperson of a private news channel is all set to kick off its proceedings today (Thursday).

A senior official of ministry of law and human rights confirmed to The Nation on Wednesday night that Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, the head of three-member judicial commission, would chair the first meeting of the commission. Other members of commission include Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman. The commission has been formed by the Supreme Court and given the task to expose those behind the attack on Hamid Mir. Reportedly, the commission has been directed to submit investigation report within 21 days.
