Long-term solution of energy crisis lies in Thar coal

KARACHI (PR): Sindh Minister for Energy, Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that energy crisis from across the country is yet to be over and needs to be dealt with serious efforts.

Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of 13th Pakistan Oil and Gas & Energy Exhibition (POGEE) here at Karachi Expo Centre on Thursday, the minister said that country is still in deep crunch of energy and its long-term solution lies in the Thar coal reserves. He said that there was not a single foreign investor in Thar coal until a Chinese company has set up joint venture for power generation. He said that federal government should have taken all the provinces on board when finalizing agreements with the foreign investors. He said that federal government has not consulted with Sindh government while signing accords with Chinese government on the occasion of Chinese President’s visit to Pakistan. He further pointed out that Sindh has over 60 per cent of the total production of oil and gas and coal reserves. He said that the natives had rights on local resources and first they would be compensated then they would be relocated and then projects would be initiated. He said that events like POGEE provide a chance to the industry professionals and experts to gather at a unique avenue that guarantees attainment of latest information available through latest technology display and business networking opportunities.

As many as 28 countries are showcasing their state of the art oil and gas equipment and technology. China has set up a full-fledged pavilion in the three-day exhibition. The energy conference titled “Integrated Solutions to Pakistan’s Energy Needs” will be held on Saturday at the venue.

Chairman Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, M Sami Khan expressed his reservations about the deals being made by the federal government in purchase of LNG. He said that it was right of the general masses to know the real facts of the agreements and the price government has agreed upon. Chief Operating Office, SSGC, ShoibWarsi said that 2nd terminal of LNG would be completed by end December this year. He said that LNG supply would definitely ease up the gas shortage in the country. He pointed out that SSGC is catering to the needs of 2.6 million consumers in Sindh/Balochistan. The Ambassador of Belgium, Peter Claes said events like POGEE are much helpful in providing solutions to the energy issues. He said that his country is willing to extend technological assistance to Pakistan in resolving its energy crisis. Managing Director, Pegasus Consultancy, AamerKhanzada and Vice President of FPCCI Ikram Rajput also spoke on the occasion.

Pakistan sees increase in demand for eco-friendly homes

LAHORE (PR): Pakistan is currently undergoing an eco-revolution as revealed by new data released by online real estate marketplace Lamudi Pakistan. Nearly half (49.5 per cent) of the current residential property listings on Lamudi.pk’s website include eco-friendly features and elements of sustainable design.

This trend towards eco-friendly homes has accelerated since last year in light of increasing energy costs, higher air-conditioning bills, and prolonged heat spells. Architects and construction companies are also increasingly employing eco-friendly practices to counter these problems. Lamudi registered the highest number of environmentally-friendly homes in Karachi, followed by Lahore and lastly Islamabad. One example of an ongoing remarkable sustainable development is that of DHA City Karachi, which is envisioned as a self-contained sustainable city.

TDAP holds meeting

KARACHI (PR): The issue of export and import of wheat is being currently dealt by Ministry of Food Security and provisional ministries of Food and Agriculture and other trading organizations.

To develop an action plan/mechanism for export of surplus wheat, TDAP, being the premier trade promotion organization, organized a meeting at TDAP –Karachi the other day which was chaired by Secretary TDAP. The meeting was attended by the officers of the M/Commerce, Punjab Minister of Agriculture Farrukh Javed and secretaries, departments ofagriculture of Punjab & Sindh and major grain merchants of the country.

The meeting discussed in detail, the local and international market and prices for wheat in order to work out a mechanism for export of wheat surplus which includes stock of carry forward wheat from the last year, and availability of new crop. Issues like the availability of surplus stock and its flow into export markets, pricing mechanism and its administration and mechanism of disbursal were discussed at length.
