Larkana facing threat

LARKANA Emergency was declared at Akil Agani Loop Bund (embankment) on River Indus, as Army and Rangers personnel were called in to repair the dyke after 150 feet breach, seven kilometres from Larkana city on Monday morning. According to the details, an alarming situation was developed when a villager, Dr Mohammad Juman Bhutto, who was heading towards More Chandio for medical aid, found erosion between 0/7 dykes of Akil Agani Loop Bund near village Akil. As no Irrigation official was available at the spot, he informed villagers and Rangers for the early action to cope with the situation and they started repairing the damaged portion. Later, Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro along with locals reached the spot and called in the officials concerned, including the DCO and DPO Larkana besides Army personnel for immediate action. During the repair work, heavy stones were sued to fill the crack but exercise remained fruitless. Due to the lack of stones and machinery, the situation was getting worse. Meanwhile, the news about imminent flood created panic among the Larkana citizens and all the markets in Bunder Road, Resham Gali, Anaj Mandi and other areas were closed. However, officials were trying to convince the people that the embankment would be repaired and there was no threat deluge. After the electronic media flashed the news, the locals started shifting to safer places including Karachi and Hyderabad. According to the official sources, the required modern machinery and material have been transported to the spot while stone pitching at Aqil Agani Bund and construction of Mangli Bund has been started, which would be completed by the midnight. The National Highway Authority has also joined the efforts for protecting the people and the land from devastation. Meanwhile, the media persons observed lack of coordination among the Larkana ministers, party leaders and district officials. The local civil society and the citizens have expressed dissatisfaction over the criminal negligence of the officials concerned and demanded immediate inquiry into the matter.
