ISLAMABAD To thwart the politically motivated inquiry against him by National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Secretary Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Sohail Karim Hashmi challenged the appointment of Javid Zia Qazi as Acting Chairman NAB in the Lahore High Court and the LHC has restrained NAB from taking any action against him. Sources in the PMDC informed that the request for NAB probe against Secretary PMDC Sohail Karim Hashmi was moved by Registrar of the department Ahmad Nadeem Akbar on the alleged direction of personal doctor of President Asif Ali Zardari Dr Asim, who is one of the members of the Board of Directors of the PMDC. These sources further informed that Dr Asim, personal physician of President Asif Ali Zardari, is not happy with the Secretary PMDC and in the recent scandal of verification of fake degrees of doctors he, in support of the other staff of the department, was falsely implicating him. A departmental inquiry against the Secretary was also initiated but in the meantime a formal request was made to NAB to probe the alleged charges against him. Interestingly the mandatory approval for taking such an extreme action against the sitting Secretary PMDC was not taken from the Ministry of Health, and the Registrar of the department had done all this on the behest of Dr Asim. Sources further informed that in the writ petition moved by Secretary PMDC against Acting Chairman NAB Javid Zia Qazi it was submitted that under the law the appointment of Chairman NAB required consultation with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly but in the case of promoting Deputy Chairman NAB Javid Zia Qazi as Acting Chairman these formalities were not met. On the request of Secretary PMDC the court had directed NAB not to take any action against Secretary PMDC before the prior approval from the court.
