The Indian occupation forces continue to commit atrocities in Kashmir Valley occupied by them, forcing people to live under sub-human conditions. What made things worse was New Delhi’s decision to place the entire top leadership of All Parties Hurriyat Conference under house arrest on Eid day depriving them of meeting their relatives, friends and party workers. Among those whose movement was restricted included Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Shabbir Shah and Yasin Malik. The Hurriyat leadership rightly blames international community and Pakistan for letting India have a free hand.As Mirwaiz says the world community is out to appease India and Pakistan is so deeply involved in internal matters that its leadership has no time to project the Kashmiris’ cause of the right of self-determination as envisaged in the UN Security Council resolutions. Kashmir does not figure prominently in bilateral talks between India and Pakistan. The US that can play a role of an arbitrator instead urges the two sides to resolve the issue bilaterally ignoring the fact that it has the potential to endanger the peace in the region. Pakistan needs to take urgent action and the NA Kashmir Committee led by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman must project the Kashmir cause more vigorously than it is at present.
