KARACHI - Three people including two clerics associated with a sectarian organisation were gunned down in separate acts of targeted killings in Zone East here on Tuesday.

Both the religious scholars, working as seminary teachers, were gunned down while they were at their office located at a seminary in block 6, Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Victims were shot multiple times. They were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where they succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Deceased were identified as Mufti Ghulam Akbar, 35, and Mufti Kamran, 45.

Police said at least two armed men riding a motorcycle entered a seminary and shot the victims while they were sitting at their office after Zohr prayers before fleeing. A number of their relatives and workers and supporters of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) also reached the hospital and protested against the killings.

Police officials said, besides working as seminary teachers, the victims were associated with ASWJ and were the local leaders of the organization. The motive behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. Extra contingent of law enforcers, however, dispersed the protesters after assuring them of their fullest cooperation. A case has been registered and further investigations were underway.

On the other side, a young man, belonging to Shia sect was shot dead in an act of target killing in Korangi area in the limits of Awami Colony Police Station. Deceased was identified as Qasim Abbas Raza, 34. Police officials said the incident occurred near Sugra Imambargah, adding, that the victim was on his way to a factory where he used to work when armed motorcyclists targeted and killed him over unexplained reasons. A case has been registered and further investigation was underway.
