ISLAMABAD Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Wednesday updated both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, separately, about the ongoing army operation in South Waziristan. According to Presidential Spokesman Farhautallah Babar, the COAS discussed professional preparedness of the Pak Army with the President. Matters pertaining to national security also came under discussion during the meeting, he added. Officials privy to these meetings told TheNation that the Army Chief also explained to both the leaders about the concerns regarding the deployment of additional 30,000 US troops in Afghanistan. The political as well as military leadership resolved that the US must address Pakistans concerns about the deployment of 30,000 additional American troops in Afghanistan. According to the officials, the President assured General Kayani that the Government would meet financial, logistic, and professional requirements of the Army for the ongoing war against terrorism. Political pundits attributed critical importance to the meetings of the Army Chief with both the President and the Prime Minister in the wake of the governments precarious state of affairs after apex courts judgement against NRO. They were of the view that these meetings were to denounce the impression of any distance between the civilian and military leadership on all the national issues.
