Lawyers, lairs & touts

This is with reference to Harris Steel case where the main accused has given a statement implicating certain lawyers. The lawyers' community has played a vital role in the recent movement for restoration of judiciary. It must also be kept in mind that the movement for creation of Pakistan was dominated by politicians most of whom were leading lawyers. Prominent amongst them were such men of impeccable integrity and intellect like Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal. Then, there were some lawyers that were a part of the Unionist Party who opposed the creation of Pakistan and served the British Raj until independence of the country. These collaborators were awarded with titles, land and lucrative assignments in government by their colonial masters. The ranks of the lawyers' movement for restoration of CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry's independent judiciary also had men of every ilk and included a few opportunists like Latif Khosa and others too. They have since hiked their legal fees to unimaginable levels, taking justice beyond the reach of common man. The fact that these astronomical legal fees were not being charged in 2007 gives further credence to the allegations that they have duped their clients into believing that they can exercise undue influence on the present judiciary due to their contribution in restoration. Other lawyers of lesser professional caliber are also exploiting their newfound political clout to extract huge fees from clients with false promises. -SHAHZAD KHALIL, Sialkot, December 20.
