Pakistan to cement its relationship with Turkey on geo-strategic level: Zardari

President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said Pakistan was determined to further cement its relationship with Turkey on geo-strategic and economic level by taking it to new heights. Both the countries share a similarity of perceptions on a wide range of regional and international issues, he said during his one-on-one meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ahead of the trilateral meeting of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey. The President expressed satisfaction over the contacts at the leadership level between the two countries and said that Pakistan and Turkey enjoy a special relationship, rooted in centuries old links of history, culture and religion. He said that Pakistan attaches great importance to infrastructure linking it with Turkey via Iran and is also keen to see Turkish investment in energy, agriculture, food production and defence cooperation. The President expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved within the framework of Turkey-Afghanistan- Pakistan trilateral process. The President told the Turkish Prime Minister that during his visit to Pakistan in October 2009, a high level cooperation council (HLCC) was established to monitor and review the progress in bilateral relations between the two countries. He said Pakistan and Turkey have agreed to increase their bilateral trade to two billion dollars and beyond by 2012. He said that Pakistan would welcome Turkish cooperation and investment in the urban-transport systems and low-cost housing.
