LAHORE: The Punjab Inspector General (Prisons) told a three member bench of the Supreme Court on Monday that two deputy superintendents and a jail warden have been suspended over an incident of presence of a lizard in food of women prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore.

The IG further said the inquiry is underway and will be completed soon.

The bench headed by Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani was holding proceedings into a suo motu notice it had taken on the news item about the incident. Inspector General of Prisons Punjab Farooq Nazeer and DIG Prisons Malik Mubashir appeared before the court on short notice.

The DIG submitted before the court that they have initiated an inquiry into the incident and within 24 hours they would present its report before the court. He submitted that apparently it happened while distributing the food among the prisoners. He said there were three buckets of chicken and in one bucket the lizard fall. He said after disposing of the bucket, they provided an alternative food to the prisoners.

According to the news item, some women fall ill after being served with the food having remains of a lizard in their supper at Kot Lakhpat Jail. The court adjourned hearing till the finalization of inquiry report.–Staff Reporter
