LOS Angeles-Cate Blanchett has revealed the song Blue Moon helped inspire her performance in Blue Jasmine.

The actress is hotly tipped to earn an Oscar-nomination for her performance as depressed socialite Jasmine in Woody Allen’s new film, which features the classic 1934 song - famously covered by artists including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra - in the soundtrack.

Cate told Empire magazine: “That was a BIG inspiration for me. It was a big help, knowing that rhythmically and tonally that was going to be a part of the mix.”

And the actress - who has already garnered a Golden Globe nomination for the role - admitted working with eccentric director Woody was quite a challenge.

She said: “Working for Woody is like a gladiatorial sport. You either sink or swim. But when you’re out there trying to battle the lions, I did get a sense that the film was... alive. That much energy and that much care is fantastic.”
