“As far as you are concerned, there is only one embassy that matters in this country, the American Embassy.”
–Gen. Ayub Khan to his cabinet.

This was the right strategy for the time. We were a new state, and we need all the help we could get from the superpower to stay strong in the face of India. But we took this to heart.
The US reciprocated genera Ayub with the presence of security facilities in Pakistan, and gave full backing to the military takeover of the country. The US needed a stable ally in the region, and only a dictatorship could achieve that.
But the US failed to win hearts and minds of civilians.
Today this importance that the establishment gives to the US manifests in secret drone programs, backbreaking aid conditions and a sense of dependence that has evolved into hate.
