I am a 22-year-old cancer patient admitted in the Orthopedic Ward of the Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore for the last 4 months. I belonged to a poor family of Green Town. We are nine family members including my mother, father, brothers and sisters who all suffer from this same disease. I am suffering a mysterious disease for the last 14 years. I daily leave the hospital to beg for money from people but often return empty handed. I have undergone 64 operations in the Sheikh Zayed Hospital so far. My disease started when I was only eight years old. Since then I had been visiting all the public and private sector hospitals in the country including hospitals in Karachi and Islamabad. Despite spending a huge sum of money, I have had no improvement. My father sold our house in Johar Town at a throwaway price to bear the expenses of our treatment. He even borrowed money on interest from relatives and many other people. Now even he has given up and I am on my own. During the four months that I have been admitted in this hospital, doctors have carried out 14 operations but my condition has not improved. The doctors have postponed my next operation three times as I could not arrange for money to pay for medicines and surgery. I appeal to the Chief Minister Punjab to take pity on me and my family members and help in our treatment. -FOUZIA YOUSAF, Orthopedic Ward, Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, Cell: 03228415798, Lahore, February 23.
