ISLAMABAD - The military leadership of the country on Tuesday expressed its gratitude to the United Kingdom (UK) for its multifaceted support to Pakistan and especially for hosting the London Conference on Afghanistan. These remarks were made by Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Tariq Majid while talking to visiting Chief of General Staff, UK, General Sir David Richards, who met separately with them here on Tuesday. According to the military sources, General Sir David Richards exchanged views with Pakistans military leadership over the issues including changing dynamics of the regional security situation, impact of the revised US strategy for Afghanistan and the region, and enhancement of the bilateral cooperation between the defence forces of the two countries. The informed sources said the visiting dignitary lauded the sacrifices rendered by the people and Armed Forces of Pakistan and assured the UKs continued support to eradicate terrorism and violent extremism from the region. While talking to the visiting dignitary, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Tariq Majid thanked the UKs government for its multifaceted support to Pakistan. He appreciated resolute commitment of the UK in the region especially its efforts for hosting the London Conference on Afghanistan. General Majid hoped that the London Conference would pave way for broader political reconciliation in Afghanistan and it would contribute something meaningful for maintaining historical neutrality of Afghanistan and safeguarding legitimate interests of its immediate neighbours. The sources further said that the visiting dignitary during his meeting with Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani shared the operational details of the military operation 'Mushtariq jointly being carried out by the US-led NATO forces and the Afghan National Army in Helmand province. They also discussed impact of the Helmand operation on Pakistan, bilateral cooperation, all time intelligence sharing, arrest of important Afghan Taliban commanders and military operations in South Waziristan Agency. The visiting dignitary praised the role of Pakistan Army in war on terror and said that his country would increase its coordination with Pakistans Armed Forces.
