ISLAMABAD - As the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP) expecting even strength in Senate elections to be held on March 5, political parties are in a race to woo lawmakers from Fata for electing their fielded candidates as the four seats can change the game during the election of Chairman of the upper house.

According to some FATA lawmakers in National Assembly, political parties were chasing their MNAs for voting their respective ideological candidates from Fata unlike the past when the representatives from tribal areas would elect kith and kin for the seats in Senate.

Unlike the past when FATA lawmakers would support the majority party in both houses of the parliament, lawmakers from tribal areas this time feel unhappy with the ruling party arguing that out of 11 MNAs from FATA, the government has not bestowed any favour on them and have neglected them in sharing any portfolio with MNAs of tribal areas.

The PML-N has given ticket to Sanaullah Khan from South Waziristan on the grounds that his brother MNA Ghalib Wazir, who also contested election in 2013 on PML-N ticket, would give him a vote.

Sources said the role of Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was serious in wooing FATA MNAs in order to garner support for those Senate candidates who would later elect PML-N nominee during the in-house election for Chairman Senate.

The PML-N has also engaged Ameer JUI-F Maulana Fazal Rehman in lobbying for Fata candidates in order to clinch the seat of Chairman Senate.

Interestingly, JUI-F has intensified lobbying for its four candidates from Fata who are active members of the religious party including Munir Khan Orakzai, Eid Gul Mengal, Abdul Malik and Ainuddin Shakir.

PPP wants its four party ideologues from FATA including Akhunzada Chattan, Abdul Raziq, Engr Malik Rashid and Malik Nadir Khan.

But interestingly, MNA Shah Ji Gul Afridi who is also parliamentary leader of FATA lawmakers in National Assembly and is a staunch opponent of PML-N due to his differences with Governor KP Sardar Mehtab Khan Abbasi, has gathered his like-minded FATA MNAs to support the candidates who are their respective relatives.

MNA Afridi will vote for his brother Taj Muhammad and will ask MNA Sajid Hussain Toori to support his brother so that Afridi cast vote for candidate Sajjad Hussain Toori, the relative of MNA Toori.

Similarly, MNA Nasir Khan's brother Momin Khan is a candidate for the slot of Senate including Haji Khan Afridi who is once again trying his luck as he would be retiring next month as Senator.

But according to one FATA lawmaker the offer for FATA lawmakers in return of vote in Senate was so huge and mouth watering that MNA Ghalib Wazir may betray his brother Sanaullah when it comes to vote.

Half of Senate seats (52 Senators) would retire next month after completing their six-year tenure for which Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed initial formalities including nomination papers and scrutiny of candidates while candidates would decide to withdraw their nominations or contest elections on February 28.
