Messrs Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan have pledged their full support to the lawyers' Long March on March 9, 2009. While wishing them best of luck, I would request them to emphasize the cause of having an 'honest' judiciary instead of an 'independent' one. I think judiciary is quite independent already and can pass any judgment it wishes to pass even if, unfortunately, it is not always judicious. No wonder most decisions of the lower courts are reversed in the higher courts. It is common knowledge that the moneyed class with smart lawyers can get away with any crime. We know all that goes on in our courts and what role the lawyers play in it. Demanding an honest judiciary makes better sense in our context because if it is honest, it would be answerable only to Allah. That means it would pronounce judgment on merit alone, would not be influenced by anyone and, thus, would automatically act independently. Let's pray, therefore, for having an honest judiciary and may Allah help us all in getting one. -COL. (Retd) RIAZ JAFRI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, January 12.
