KASUR - At least 15 people, including four women and a boy, were killed and 21 others critically injured when a passenger van plunged into a canal near Changa Manga yesterday.
The Pattoki-bound van was on the way from Raiwind when one of its tyres burst and tie rod broke. As a result, it went out of the driver’s control.
According to initial report of the police, the incident occurred due to speeding. Kasur DPO Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said the van driver could not control the speeding vehicle as one of its tyres burst and tie rod broke. As a result, the van plunged into the canal by breaking the safety barrier. He said 13 persons, including four women and a boy, were killed while nine others sustained critical injuries.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and started operation. They shifted the injured to Chunian THQ Hospital. Kasur DPO Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and DCO Muhammad Shahid along with a huge police contingent reached the spot and monitored the operation. The residents of the area also reached the site and informed Rescue 1122 immediately.
According to the doctors at the Chunian THQ Hospital, the death toll might rise as at least five of the injured were in a critical condition, hospital sources said.
It is not known how many people were on board, but the authorities have stopped the water inflow into the canal to ensure that all the bodies and injured are taken out.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Mannan son of Hakim Ali of Changa Manga, Akbar Ali son of Ghulam Ali of Changa Manga, Niyamat Ali s/o Noor Muhammad of Narowal, Muhammad Hanif s/o Nawab Din of Kot Radha Kishan, Salamat s/o Charagh Din of Chak 15, Pattoki, Salman, Haji Muhammad Sharif, Maryam Bibi, Samina Bibi, Parveen Bibi, Jamila Bibi and 12-year-old Ammad.
