LAHORE - Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that child labour at brick kilns will not be tolerated.

“The law will take its course over the matter. Kiln owners will be jailed if they violate the law. All-out resources will be utilized for providing education to the children working at brick kilns,” the CM said while chairing a meeting from Civil Secretariat yesterday. The meeting reviewed the measures adopted for the elimination of child labour .

Shahbaz said educational package of Punjab government will change the life of the children.

He expressed satisfaction over the implementation of law regarding elimination of child labour and he approved stipend, free uniform, stationery and textbooks for children working at brick kilns. He said that monthly stipend of Rs1000 will be given to the children going to school on the start of academic session during current year whereas free uniform, stationery, textbooks and shoes will also be provided. In addition, Rs2000 will also be given to the parents, she promised.

Meanwhile, District Coordination Officer Capt Muhammad Usman and CCPO Amin Wains led a raid to Nathoki village as part of government’s campaign against child labour . During raids, 40 children below the age of 14 years were got freed, a press release said.

The DCO and CCPO arrested their owners and sealed their brick kiln. They also distributed books and toffees among children. Moreover, the DCO also chaired a meeting in regard with child labor at brick kiln of the metropolitan city at Town Hall. The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioners, Official of Special Branch and Education departments.

The DCO said that CDGL will not allow parents to send their below age children for child labor at brick kilns on the name of poverty. He directed all assistant commissioners to prepare data about total numbers of brick kilns in the provincial capital in a couple of days and how many are functional.

"Assistant Commissioners, SPs and Education officer of the concerned area will inspect all brick kilns of their jurisdiction during school time to check child labor and in case of any violation strict action should be taken.

Similarly a team of special branch and Police patrolling teams will also inspect all brick kilns of their area during day time," the DCO added. Mr. Usman also instructed SNA to have GPS coordinates of all brick kilns of city.
