Criminal greed

THAT greed, reflecting the global materialistic trend, has spread its tentacles in Pakistan at the cost of good values, that at one time used to be the pride of Eastern society, is no longer in question. Incidents of rank injustice and even cruelty that only this cardinal sin could inspire have become alarmingly common. One such incident, occurring at Gujranwala on Tuesday, when two brothers running a hotel brutally murdered a waiter who was only demanding his wages that had been withheld by them for some time past. They beat him up, sprinkled petrol on his clothes and set them alight. Unable to bear these atrocities, the poor waiter died and in a bid to hush up the matter, the hotel owners obtained a written reconciliation agreement from his parents under duress, and when they felt that the tragedy could no longer be kept hidden, they bolted from the scene. It is time social reformers and thinkers devised a way to deal with the violent trend increasingly gaining ground in the country. The government, on its part, should not sit behind, and not only enforce the law but also remove the widespread worries of the people that make them lose their self-control at the drop of the hat.
