ISLAMABAD Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed the Ministry of Livestock and Dairy Development to formulate National Livestock and Dairy Development Policy so that the meat and milk could be made affordable to a common man. Stressing the need for making short, medium and long-term operational strategies while chairing a briefing on livestock and dairy development here at the PMs Secretariat Thursday, the Premier also called for the need to adopt modern management techniques to make this sector a profitable agriculture industry. Realizing the fact that half of Pakistans population was under-fed, under-nourished and less healthy because meat and milk was beyond the affordability of the majority, the Prime Minister underscored the need to exploit livestock development potential to make milk and meat affordable to the common man. He said that the creation of a separate ministry of livestock and dairy development was a clear recognition of the importance of this sector by the present government. Highlighting the importance of upgradation of infrastructure facilities as well as research and development, the Prime Minister directed the ministry to evolve a system of real time detection, reporting and prevention of seasonal animal diseases to mitigate the risk of large scale livestock losses to the poor farming communities. The Prime Minister said that Livestock and Dairy Development being a pre-dominant part of agro-based rural economy, is constituting 54 per cent of agriculture sector. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan was blessed with a fairly large population of buffalos, cows, sheep and goats with vast tracts of pastoral lands where a large number of rural population engaged in cattle-raising, but the country is unable to produce enough meat and milk to feed the people. While assuring full government support, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for public and private sectors investment and a long term policy commitment towards actualizing the true poverty alleviation potential since livestock and dairy development is one of the most under-developed sectors of agriculture.
